Food Intake in Elderly with Hypertension in Rural Area

Nutrition is the integrated elements of the elderly health. In general, food intake of Korean elderly were inadequate in quality as well as in quantity. Especially, Intakes of sodium focused in the hypertension patient. This study was to identify intake of dietary nutrients and blood pressure-related minerals in elderly people with hypertension. The subjects were 53 elderlies over 65 years in rural area. The dietary nutrients intake using 24 hours recall and blood pressure were measured. Depending on the blood pressure level, dietary Na, Ca, K intake were analyzed. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test using SPSS 12.0. The subjects tended to consume high carbohydrate, low fat and protein. The dietary Na intake was higher than recommended target intake. The intakes of dietary Ca and K were lower than recommended intake. Even without statistical significance, dietary Na intake was higher in the stage ¥°, ¥± hypertension elderly than pre-hypertension and normal maintenance elderly, dietary Ca intake was lower. From the results of this study, the nutrients intake of the subjects appeared inadequate, and imbalance. These results suggested that nursing intervention needs to include nutritionally balanced diet for hypertension elderly.
